Building Relationships

A Telecourse Recording with Rita Herzog, CNVC Certified Trainer from Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Recorded During March, 2009
Running Time: 4 Hours (240 Minutes)

Cost: $20.00 USD

This three-session intermediate/advanced level telecourse recording is suggested for those of us who have been studying NVC for some time, have read Marshall Rosenberg's Book, "Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life" and have a working understanding of observation, feelings, needs and requests as well as experience with empathy, expression and perhaps some dialogue.

This recording is intended to expand our horizons using NVC concepts, awareness, and skills to navigate and transform our conversations, our relationships, and ourselves.

Transforming Pain and Anger (Session 1)

We often do not realize the energy we use to keep our deep pain hidden from consciousness. So familiar, so long with us, we are sometimes reluctant to let it go: the guilt, shame, anger, regret. It seems to be a part of who we are. I know the deep fear of approaching that pain, of inviting it into the light. For me it is like walking into the valley of death -- only with light, love, and healing waiting at the end. NVC keeps us safe on the journey, until we emerge, immersed in the full beauty of who we are.

Outline: Transforming Pain and Anger

  • Allowing Full Expression of Our Deep Pain
  • Connecting to Our Deep Needs through Self-Empathy
  • Harvesting the Beauty inside Our Judgment

Transcending Conflict All the Way to Connection (Session 2)

I would like to explore this question: How do I work through conflicts all the way to joyous connection, and harvest so much learning in the process that I won't ever regret one minute of the experience? I see this work of transcending conflict as transformative -- as a way to start creating the world I want to live in, and a world I can leave as a legacy to my children and grandchildren and beyond.

Outline: Transcending Conflict All the Way to Connection

  • Staying with the Moment of Connection
  • Surfing the Intensity of Other People’s Emotions
  • Knowing What to Ask For
  • Strategies to Serve Life

Creating Boundaries and Building Bridges (Session 3)

Many of us struggle our whole lives to resolve this relationship dilemma: how to keep our personal boundaries safe, and, how to create the deep, full connections between us that serve our lives. I have come to realize that for me it is not a problem with a final solution; rather, it is an ongoing dilemma, always to be managed. For many years of my life, I have been caught up in the either-or system of thinking. Either I give up a part of myself (and thus do not protect my own integrity and autonomy) in order to nurture my relationships with others, or I stand my ground, protecting my values and my identity, at the expense of my relationships with my partner or my family. Now, when I am up to it, I nurture myself with empathy, or I soak it in from others. Then I feel energized to engage with my loved ones and to listen to their hearts, to the needs they want to protect. At that level of heart to heart dialogue, I often find the sweet connection I am yearning for.
