  • Session 1: What Is NVC? — FREE!

Miki brings years of experience training future NVC trainers and conceptual clarity to help you explore the meaning of NVC.  Take this free session and delve into topics such as:

  • The relationship between NVC and “truth” or “morality”
  • The purpose of learning and using NVC
  • The difference between NVC consciousness, the focus on the four components and the use of specific language in dialogue
  • The different approaches to practicing NVC
  • What it means to live NVC in a world that operates on different principles
  • When and how NVC can become a spiritual practice

Miki's engaging style and deep wisdom will inspire you and remind you why you were drawn to NVC in the first place. Join the introductory session on February 8th, and you’ll have the chance to register for the remaining 7 sessions at our special rate of $235 USD!

  • Session 2 – Assumptions and Intentions of NVC
Like every other theory or story about human beings and life, NVC has assumptions behind it. Like every practice, NVC relies on a set of intentions that ground and support the practice. What is your understanding of NVC principles?  In this session, you will be asked to explore what your own understanding of NVC principles is by delving deeply into what has been meaningful for you about learning and embracing NVC. The shift in consciousness that NVC invites us into entails both a different way of understanding human beings and life, and a different set of intentions for our daily living. This session focuses on both sets of principles.

  • Session 3 – A Deeper Look at the Building Blocks of NVC
If you're like most people, you learned early on that NVC is about observations, feelings, needs and requests. Seldom, do people grasp the significance of each component for grounding our practice. What is powerful about making an observation rather than an evaluation?  What do we get from focusing on feelings rather than thoughts? How can focusing on needs lead to more creative strategies and a fuller experience of life? How can making a request transform lives? This session provides you an opportunity to grapple with these questions as well as other key choices that support the NVC practice such as what can help us in choosing empathy or self-expression. This level of engagement can support you in making your practice conscious and putting it to use in support of your needs instead of as a fixed method for relating to people.

  • Session 4 – Key Differentiations: Their Meaning and Use
The consciousness that grounds the practice NVC differs from the cultural context into which most of us were raised. Accordingly, despite the conceptual simplicity of the process, many people find it challenging to integrate the practice deeply. The Key Differentiations – such as “shift vs. compromise,” “vulnerability vs. weakness,” or “choice vs. submission or rebellion” – point to milestones in a consciousness shift and help ground the integration of NVC learning. This session will provide you with opportunities to engage with the Key Differentiations as tools for exploring the consciousness of NVC for your own personal work as well as for sharing NVC with others.

  • Session 5 – Interdependence: Making Everyone Matter

Western modern culture upholds independence as a high value and we are taught to avoid dependence by not asking for things. In addition, the value placed on autonomy and freedom results in challenges in making collaborative decisions, working out conflicts and holding everyone’s needs with care. At the same time, the level of separation prevalent in Western cultures results in a lack of trust that our needs and skills matter. This session focuses on understanding interdependence as a fact of life as well as a conscious practice of peace for sustaining life at all levels.

  • Session 6 – NVC and Other Modalities

Many people who are attracted to NVC and practice it are also drawn to a variety of other approaches such as traditional religious practices, modern spiritual forms, “The Work” of Byron Katie, Internal Family System and many others.  In this session, you will receive a framework for exploring compatible and incompatible core principles between NVC and other modalities.

  • Session 7 – Making Sense of Power

Understanding power from within a needs-based NVC perspective is often challenging. The commitment to attending to everyone’s needs often leads people to abdicate power in an attempt to move away from control and unilateral decisions. Another challenge involves thinking about the kind of power that is inherent in organizational and social structures, where differential access to resources creates possibilities for exercising power in harmful ways even without actively choosing to do so. This session defines power as the capacity to mobilize resources to meet needs, and addresses the variety of issues that arise from this definition, such as the distinction between external and internal resources; different forms of exercising power; and choices about how to respond to others’ use of power.

  • Session 8 – Personal Growth and Social Change

While talk about social change abounds within NVC communities, the distinction between personal growth and social change often remains unclear. This session addresses a number of fundamental questions about NVC and nonviolence more generally. Is “being the change” enough to create social change? What does it mean to cultivate a consciousness of nonviolence? How do the skills of NVC apply to group and organizational settings? What does NVC have to offer social change activists?

Prerequisites: Intermediate skill level.
