How Telecourses Work ...

Telecourses are a type of distance learning.  In this venue, students and trainers attend the class over the phone at the same time, but in different places.  Through the use of telephone technology, such as regular phones, cell phones, Skype or other computer/Internet phone services, telecourses allow students to work Nonviolent Communication classes into their busy home and/or work schedules. You may take telecourses from your home or office at times that are convenient for you.

Okay, that’s the technical answer to how telecourses work, but what’s the story?   Why take one?

Well, the real answer is that telecourses are easily accessible – you call from any phone, anywhere.  So, say you have a busy life and you don’t have time to travel.  You can take your telecourse from your home or office.

Or, say that you have a busy life and you travel a lot.  Well, you can attend all your telecourse sessions no matter where you are at the moment.  Albuquerque, New Mexico; Paris, France; Venice, Italy; Timbuktu, Africa…it just doesn’t matter.  No matter where you are, if you have a phone or computer with an Internet connection, you may attend your telecourse.

But, aren’t the long distance fees atrocious?

They can be, but we offer a popular, alternative solution, like Skype, for instance.  Skype is a computer-based phone system that is free to anyone in the world.  If you call another Skype number from your computer, your calls are 100% free.  Your Skype connection is 100% free.  Visit www.skype.com to learn more about this exciting program.

Also, the company we use to manage our telecourse call lines offers a variety of phone numbers for different countries, so even if you don’t have a Skype connection, you may minimize your long distance fees by calling into your telecourse using phone numbers from any of the following countries:  United States, UK, Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland or Italy.  Our service provider continues to add phone lines for other countries to maximize the cost effectiveness to our students.

Are telecourses kind of boring?

Let’s be honest.  Maybe you’re thinking this, so let’s just get the elephant out into the living room. We’re on the Internet for heaven sake; we’ve got lots of room for elephants!  The truth is, it is sometimes more challenging for people to stay connected to the trainer and other participants when they don’t get to see each other and witness body language.

Our instructors have been specially trained to deal with this very issue.  They have methods for keeping people connected, keeping the course interesting, and for providing compelling learning opportunities.

Like what?  Well, like giving participants lots of opportunities to give feedback or say what is in their mind, exercises that participants can do during class to deepen their learning, “buddy” systems that connect students with each other between class sessions, and lots of others exercises and techniques to keep the course fun and interesting.

Plus, each telecourse is augmented by an online classroom that lets you discuss course topics with other students, share pictures and more. Consider it an easy way to get more connected to your fellow classmates, and get maximum benefit from the telecourse.

If it’s a phone call, where are the other people calling from?

This is the exciting part of telecourses!  Thank goodness you finally asked! People join telecourses from many countries in the world.  The NVC Academy has subscribers from over 20 countries, so you could be in a telecourse with someone from Estonia, Canada, South Africa, Hungary, Denmark, France or even the North Pole!  How many opportunities do you get in a day to hobnob with people from so many different countries?

Are these telecourses in English?

Yes.  They’re in English.

Okay, I’m intrigued, but how do I actually call in to a telecourse?

You learn more about our current courses and register here. Within 24 hours you will receive an email from us with a phone number (several actually – remember you get to choose how you call in) and a conference access code number that allows you to enter your class.  That’s all there is to it.  Getting into your telecourse is a snap—Just dial in and count to ten!

So to sum it up, why take a telecourse?

  • It’s convenient.  Learn from your own home or office – no traveling involved
  • It’s cheap.  No travel, room or board expenses
  • It’s easy.  Any regular phone, cell phone or Skype connection will work
  • It’s community.   It is not unusual to be in a telecourse with others from various U.S. states, Canada, Switzerland, Ireland, UK, Australia, or fifteen other countries in the world!
  • It’s fun.  Learn from NVC trainers from around the world
