One person cannot singlehandedly transform a culture and make it more collaborative, no matter how much you dedicate yourself to it. Transforming a culture requires attention and change at the systemic level.

Collaboration relies on finding effective ways of attending to multiple needs. For its full benefits to be felt across the entire system, all levels of an organization benefit from aligning with the principle of focusing on needs and purpose.

This course centers on systems. As such, it is uniquely suited for executives and managers who are committed to embracing collaboration across the entire spectrum of your teams and organizations.

During the first week, the focus will be on learning which systems are crucial for any organization to establish and clarifywhether that organization is collaborative or not. Additionally, we'll be delving into and clarifying the basic principles of shifting an organization toward a collaborative orientation.

Throughout the following weeks, we'll highlight specific systems and propose ways of aligning those systems with core principles of collaboration:

About Miki Kashtan


Miki Kashtan is a co-founder of Bay Area Nonviolent Communication (BayNVC) and Lead Collaboration Consultant at the Center for Efficient Collaboration. Miki aims to support visionary leadership and shape a livable future using collaborative tools based on the principles of Nonviolent Communication. She shares these tools through meeting facilitation, mediation, consulting, coaching, and training for organizations and committed individuals. Her latest book, Reweaving Our Human Fabric: Working together to Create a Nonviolent Future (2015) explores the practices and systems needed for a collaborative society. She is also the author of Spinning Threads of Radical Aliveness: Transcending the Legacy of Separation in Our Individual Lives, and The Little Book of Courageous Living. Miki blogs at The Fearless Heart and her articles have appeared in the New York Times ("Want Teamwork? Encourage Free Speech"), Tikkun, Waging Nonviolence, Shareable, Peace and Conflict, and elsewhere. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from UC Berkeley.
