Dialogue in the Workplace

April 25 - May 30, 2014 (5 sessions, skipping May 23)
Fridays, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

One of the key challenges of engaging in dialogue in the workplace is that – while we are all equally human – the norms of the workplace make honest and open dialogue challenging, especially when power differences are present.

This course offers a plethora of considerations and tips designed to allow you to humanize your relationships at work, focus on your common goals, and bring more collaboration and goodwill to your team – and beyond.

During this course, Miki will focus on dialogue as it relates to each of the following five core types of relationships within the workplace:

Dialogue within Communities

July 18 and 25, August 1 and 8, 2014 (4 sessions)
Fridays, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

One of the most tragic outcomes of industrialization is the loss of community beyond our immediate family. Even though we continue to need and long for community, we have fewer avenues for fulfilling this longing – and far less experience dialoguing with other members of communities we belong to. As a result, many groups and communities flounder despite their members having shared values and goals.

This course offers both a framework and concrete practices that can support you in rebuilding necessary skills for moving beyond personal relationships to create and sustain community relations. It can also support you in choosing to re-engage or deepen your engagement with communities in which you’d like to be active.

During this course, Miki will focus on dialogue as it applies to a few specific types of communities:

Dialogue with the World at Large

October 3, 10, 17 and 31, 2014 (4 sessions, skipping October 24)
Fridays, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

In the last few decades, we’ve been called on to dialogue with many more people than just those we know and have ongoing relationships with. Modern life confronts us with gaps and differences we’re often ill-equipped to bridge. The fundamental challenge is to remain deeply committed to honoring the dignity and humanity of people who occupy positions different from our own – and still aim for the possibility that there’s an outcome acceptable to all.

This course provides invaluable support in connecting with those who are different from us and offers practices and tips on how to embody the core principles of nonviolent engagement everywhere you are.

During this course, Miki will focus on dialogue as it supports bridging several quintessential differences:
