Full Description

“Experience shapes brain structure. Experience is biology. How we treat our children changes who they are and how they will develop.“ Dr. Daniel Siegel

This 6-session course will focus on supporting people who work with children (e.g. parents, teachers, ministers, etc.) in applying the skills of NVC mediation in conflict situations that involve children.

Take this course and learn to:

  • Understand and modulate your emotions (self-regulation)
  • Recognize when children are emotionally triggered and compassionately intervene before the fight/flight/freeze response overwhelms them
  • Shift from right/wrong mentality : recognize that the ability to relate to others is linked to stress levels
  • Manage your own inner conflict when you are emotionally triggered by children’s behavior
  • Efficiently mediate conflict between children, and between children and other adults

In addition to learning about practical brain science principles, we will be working with four mediation contexts:

  1. Internal – when we are emotionally triggered as a result of working with children or supporting children with their inner conflicts.
  2. Interpersonal -- when we as adults find ourselves in conflict with a child.
  3. Informal -- when we are stepping in to mediate a conflict that has arisen between children or between a child and another adult.
  4. Formal -- when children have agreed to have us mediate or support them in mediating their conflict.

The class sessions will involve brief presentations followed by demonstrations and coached practice. John will offer his experience and expertise with NVC mediation and training; Stephanie will offer her expertise with how to work with children from a brain science perspective.

The experiential learning component will include John Kinyon’s Three-Chair Learning Model which allows participants to role play situations and receive in-the-moment coaching and real-time feedback from multiple perspectives:

  • In the mediator role you will practice staying present and connected with yourself moment-by-moment and receive feedback from those in the disputant and observing roles.
  • As disputant or observer you will have the opportunity to move into the mediator’s chair and put into practice what you have just learned.

This Three-Chair model enhances learning by creating a back and forth flow between experiential doing and stopping to “harvest” together what is learned from the role plays.

Prerequisites:    This is an Intermediate NVC course and the basics of NVC will not be covered. However, anyone who is already familiar with the basics of NVC is welcome to register for the course.
