Full Description

This 4 session telecourse offers practices and explores the relationship between core elements of NVC and universal spiritual principles. A primary template for the class is using the four NVC components of Observation, Feeling, Need, and Request to support meditative presence and awareness, in conjunction with four universal spiritual principles:

  • Being in the present moment
  • Acceptance of what is
  • Nonattachment to form
  • Flow/synchronicity

This class also explores NVC’s relationship to the following aspects of spirituality and spiritual practice:

  • The relationship of self to the larger whole of Life, to what NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg calls “Beloved Divine Energy” and “compassionate giving and receiving.” [This also includes differentiating “self” from other concepts such as ego, soul and Spirit]
  • Self-expression as spiritual practice, honestly revealing the truth, authenticity and vulnerability of what is alive in us, particularly when it feels scariest to do. [An aspect of this is what Marshall Rosenberg refers to as “doing something only if it’s play,” referencing Joseph Campbell’s famous summary of the essence of the world religions’ teachings – “follow your bliss… and doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn't be a door for anyone else.”]
  • Radical empathy and compassion, the practice of seeing ourselves in others and others in ourselves, especially when people (including ourselves) do things we find terribly offensive, harmful or destructive. This is the practice of giving love when it is the hardest to do, and when people need it the most.

The great spiritual/wisdom traditions of human history have offered practices for achieving “enlightenment” – the process for evolving to the highest levels of human potential for happiness, well being and effectiveness; a peace, love and joy that is on one level unconditional and independent of external circumstances, and on another level authentic and skillful, fully engaged with the world in meaning, purpose and relationship.

The multitude of practices these traditions have offered can be distilled down to essentially two types. One type of practice is meditation, developing present-moment awareness. This is enlightenment through transcendence (and inclusion) of thought and thinking.

The other type of practice is contemplation, contemplating and connecting with the Essence, the Source, the Ground of all life/ being and with our highest and deepest Self-identity (i.e. oneness). In this class we will see how NVC can be learned and practiced in a way that supports this transpersonal evolution, as well as intra-personal (internal) and inter-personal (self- other) effectiveness.
