(This telecourse is Session 3 of Open-Hearted Therapy: Bringing Nonviolent Communication to Psychotherapy Practice)

Substituting in Session 3 only: Guest Trainer Roxy Manning

"I am excited to have Roxy as a guest trainer for this particular session. Roxy has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and extensive experience both in private practice and in teaching NVC, including being one of the trainers in the BayNVC North America Leadership Program. Roxy has integrated a deep NVC understanding completely into her practice and I am happy for others to be inspired by her example and learn from her conceptual clarity about how she does it."

A Telephone Course (Telecourse) for psychotherapists, coaches, and counselors who want to bring the principles and skills of Nonviolent Communication to their practice.

Sunday, April 5, 2009 • 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM PDT (12:00 AM GMT on 2/2) My Time Zone?

Fee: $30 USD: All registrants receive access to a recording of the session.

Do you want to offer your clients the experience of being deeply heard and understood without any diagnosis or analysis?

Would you like to support your clients in mobilizing energy and internal resources to create movement in their lives?

Through much of modern Western culture, and with it training in psychotherapy, we learn to focus on problems. When we or our clients are unhappy, we are often very skilled in identifying patterns that limit choice; naming thoughts and beliefs that impede movement; or identifying feelings that arise in life. Using NVC-based empathic reflection in a therapeutic relationship supports us and our clients in focusing on needs. When we reflect back to clients our understanding of what they most want, the experience of relief and hope that is usually generated is often magical. This telecourse focuses on the skills that allow you to provide these experiences to your clients. The course includes a didactic presentation, opportunities to practice, and attention to case studies (supervision).

In this class you’ll learn the following concepts, skills, and practices:

  • Distinguish between reflection, understanding, and translating into needs
  • Cultivate a quality of empathic presence
  • Reflect what your client wants rather than what need is not met
  • Recognize fully the distinction between strategy and need and focus on needs for deeper connection and healing
