Trainer Tip: Mary reflects on the nature of happiness and its relationship to presence. Trainer Tip Happiness is not a state to arrive at but a manner of traveling. —Samuel Johnson The purpose of life is not to get somewhere, but to enjoy the ride. I used to live my life just “getting through” things. I was miserable most of the time but I kept telling myself that someday I would be happy. I forced myself to accept jobs I didn’t enjoy, to date men who didn’t meet my need for respect, to maintain friendships with people I didn’t enjoy because I thought that by doing this, I would benefit down the line. The problem was, “down the line” never happened. I never felt joy because I was doing things that gave me no pleasure. One day I realized that if I didn’t start to enjoy my life now, I never would. Today is what you have. Consider what you can do to enjoy it. Do something that you enjoy today. There is nothing more precious than this moment.
