John is co-creator of the Mediate Your Life (MYL) training program that is offered in different parts of the U.S. and in Asia, Europe, and Australia since 2003, including conflict management training in organizations. The MYL approach is based in the international work of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and integrates a mediation framework, mindfulness/awareness, and neuroscience. The training provides skills and conversation “maps” for navigating challenges and conflicts, inner and outer, in all aspects of life. John has been a certified trainer of the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) since 2000. He was mentored by NVC founder Marshall Rosenberg for over a decade and has been a leader in the global NVC community. John coaches and mediates in a wide range of contexts, and is an author and speaker.
John received his undergraduate degree from the University of San Francisco, where he studied psychology and philosophy (and played for USF’s nationally ranked soccer team). He went on to graduate training in clinical psychology at Penn State University. During his five years of doctoral study, he worked as a psychotherapist with individuals and groups, and as a research assistant at the Stress and Anxiety Disorders Institute. After graduate school, John helped launch and develop a small commercial business before discovering Nonviolent Communication (NVC). In 2000, he embraced full-time communication and conflict resolution work, and in 2002 co-founded the Bay Area NVC organization (BayNVC). In 2003, he began co-developing with colleague Ike Lasater the Mediate Your Life training program. John lives with his wife and children in the San Francisco Bay Area.
